Our read on it
Gripe water is an old product and widely used among mothers, and that is its popularity, not its evidence. To be plain: its effectiveness for colic is not established in strong studies, and colic itself typically begins in the second or third week, peaks around two months and resolves on its own by three or four months whether you give anything or not. Much of what gets credited to the product is in fact the passage of time. Read the safety note before buying.
Pros
- A liquid that is easy to give with the dropper
- Starts from two weeks of age
- Widely used and familiar among mothers
Cons
- Its effectiveness for colic is not established in strong studies
- Colic usually resolves on its own by three or four months
- Expensive for something unproven
Important safety information
Ask your baby's doctor before giving any oral preparation to an infant, particularly under a month old. Read the full ingredient list: gripe water formulations vary widely between makers, and some older ones contained alcohol, sugar or sodium bicarbonate, none of which should be assumed without reading. Check storage conditions and the expiry once opened. Most importantly, persistent hard crying is not always colic. If the baby is not gaining weight, or has repeated vomiting, blood in the stool, a fever or unusual drowsiness, those call for a doctor immediately, and delaying that because of a home remedy is a real risk.
