Our read on it
One of the few supplements on this list with actual studies behind it: the Lactobacillus reuteri strain has been studied in colicky infants, and some studies found reduced crying time in breastfed babies. We put it that carefully because the results are not conclusive and do not apply to every baby. None of that means it suits your baby, and the decision belongs to her doctor, not to us and not to you alone.
Pros
- One of the few supplements here with real studies behind it
- Five drops a day, simple to give
- Needs no mixing into milk
- Can be given on a spoon or on the nipple
Cons
- Expensive for a 5ml bottle
- The results are not conclusive and do not apply to every baby
- Some formulations need refrigeration once opened; check the packaging
Important safety information
Do not start any supplement for your baby without asking her doctor, and never exceed the stated dose. Probiotics are not suitable in some situations, including premature babies, immunocompromised infants, and those with a central line, and those are medical decisions. Check the packaging for storage conditions and the expiry once opened. Persistent hard crying is not always colic: if the baby is not gaining weight, or has repeated vomiting, blood in the stool or a fever, those call for a doctor immediately, not a supplement.
