Our read on it
This is the only item in the section given by mouth as a medicine rather than as food or a teether, so we write about it with more care. The sterile single-dose format is a practical advantage: no dropper to contaminate and no measuring in the dark. But read the safety note in full before buying, because it matters more than anything else we say here, and do not give it to your baby before asking her doctor.
Pros
- A sterile single dose, no dropper to contaminate and no measuring at night
- Needs no refrigeration
- Easy to carry in a bag
Cons
- A homeopathic preparation, with efficacy not scientifically established
- Homeopathic teething products have been the subject of safety warnings; see the note
- Expensive for something unproven
Important safety information
Do not give your baby any oral teething preparation without asking her doctor, and this is not a formality. The US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about homeopathic teething products after reports of serious symptoms in children and asked for some to be withdrawn, because the concentration of active ingredients in such preparations can vary between batches. Homeopathy's effectiveness for teething is not scientifically established. The safe, proven alternatives are simple: a teether chilled in the fridge rather than the freezer, massaging the gums with a clean finger, and a cool cloth. And if a baby is crying hard, or has a fever or diarrhoea, those are not teething symptoms and need a doctor.
